Chalk Pastels-Positive and Negative Space

I love the magic that appears when the blending of chalk pastels occurs! I decided to do a lesson that not only featured the chalk pastels, but to explain the concept of negative and positive space. The easiest demonstration of this idea was to fold a small cardboard in half, trace a candy can at a slant on the edge and cut along the edge while not cutting the edge of the paper to keep it intact. When i was finished, it was a perfect example of positive and negative space. We used these heart cut outs as our template to either fill the space in the center with chalk pastel or go along the edge of the cut out heart, place it o the cardstock and with a tissue, gently push the chalk onto the cardstock. When the negative or positive heart was removed, it revealed the heart shape with the opposite view of the shape. The kids placed the hearts in patterns or just randomly scattered them on the cardstock creating positively perfect hearts!
